Background
Founded in 1977 by renowned conservationist Jane Goodall, the Jane Goodall Institute works to protect chimpanzees, restore critical habitats, improve the health and education of local communities, and inspire the next generation of conservation leaders through its Roots & Shoots youth program in nearly 100 countries. To support these global conservation efforts, the organization relies on fundraising campaigns and donor support.
Challenges
The Jane Goodall Institute wanted to bring its direct mail campaign management in house to reduce costs, but existing list segmentation processes were slow, time-consuming, and dependent on external systems.
Expensive External Campaign Management
The organization relied on external systems to manage direct mail campaigns and list segmentation, spending approximately $90,000 annually on these services.
Time-Consuming List Segmentation
While the creative work could be managed internally, list segmentation required running several queries and merging the results to create each mailing list. The team spent days producing just 1,000 lines of data.
Limited Internal Efficiency
Without a faster solution for segmentation, the organization would have to continue relying on outside systems rather than bringing direct marketing efforts in house.
Solution
Building on its successful use of other Omatic products, the Jane Goodall Institute implemented additional Omatic solutions to streamline list segmentation, improve data management, and support in-house direct marketing.
Expanded Use of ImportOmatic
The organization continued using ImportOmatic to prevent bad data imports, ensure proper casing during gift entry, and automatically match e-store codes with GL codes using Dictionaries.
Integrated Raiser’s Edge and Luminate Online
The team also used Omatic’s Luminate Online Integration to match fields between Raiser’s Edge and Luminate Online, improving data consistency across systems.
Implemented SegmentOmatic and List Management
Omatic recommended SegmentOmatic together with List Management to dramatically simplify list segmentation while creating reusable templates that could easily be updated for future mailings.
Results
After implementing SegmentOmatic and List Management, the Jane Goodall Institute dramatically reduced the time required for list segmentation, eliminated reliance on external marketing systems, and achieved significant annual cost savings.
$85,000 Annual marketing cost savings
By bringing all direct marketing efforts in house, the organization expects to save $85,000 annually while eliminating its dependence on external campaign management systems.
Faster and Simpler List Segmentation
SegmentOmatic transformed a process that previously took days to produce mailing lists into one the team could complete quickly using reusable templates for future campaigns.
Greater Confidence and Ease of Use
Omatic trained the team on the new solution, making it easy to adopt and manage internally.
I was worried I wouldn’t be able to do it by myself, but it’s so much easier than I thought it would be.

Start with ImportOmatic. There are so many uses for it that you can’t go wrong. For

those who are interested in exploring the uses of the other tools, go for it! I have yet to be disappointed with any Omatic product we’ve tried.
